Dialogue can be tricky–not only because of the mechanics involved, but also because its key purposes are so often misunderstood. Dialogue isn’t just a matter of witty banter or conveying information; nor is it only about capturing a “slice of life”.  Rather when leveraged to its fullest, dialogue has the power to transform scenes, stories and even non-fiction essays, revealing essential conflicts and character dynamics.

In this one session intensive, we’ll tackle the essentials when it comes to creating effective dialogue: mechanics, style and craft as well as dialogue’s core functions within scene. We’ll examine examples from contemporary writers and specifically, how we can apply these lessons to our own writing through guided, custom exercises.

Intended for writers of any genre that employs dialogue, including fiction, essays, plays, and screenplays. No formal writing training is required, although even seasoned writers will benefit from the nuances of our discussion. We’ll start in the morning, break about an hour for lunch (not included in the tuition) and finish in the afternoon.

Feedback option: submit a dialogue-centered piece of writing (up to 1800 words) within one week after the workshop to receive written feedback from your instructor. For dialogue workshop participants only. $55
