Sometimes there’s an event, image, or something we’ve overheard that we know we need to write about in order to understand what it means to us, but we have a hunch that drawing it out would blur the focus and dilute the truth. Just as flash fiction can stun us through the magic of a story that must be told (and read) quickly, yet that has the heft and impact of something much longer, flash nonfiction can stun us with truths often delivered more directly and more intensely than in a traditional essay, yet which have the complexity and richness of the best long-form pieces. In this generative workshop, we will look at outstanding examples of different types of flash nonfiction, discuss fundamentals of craft that are particular to this genre, and write in response to prompts that will unlock our inner truth-teller. You will leave with three drafts of about 500-750 words each and ideas and resources to help you explore flash nonfiction further on your own, including names of journals that are particularly interested in this form. Open to writers at all levels, and very open to writers who want to explore cross-genre work.
