No matter the genre, scene is the essential building block of drama. Yet even experienced writers can struggle with the juggling act of elements that dynamic scenes require.
In this two day generative intensive for writers of all levels, we’ll tackle this make or break craft. We start off by grounding ourselves in core principles as well as strategies for producing quality drafts from the get go; short examples drawn from contemporary works will help bring home the concepts. We’ll also create scenes from scratch via custom exercises–templates that can be adapted for future projects and which represent the types of scenes that tend to reliably appear in stories and novels, regardless of genre, even creative non-fiction. We’ll also experiment with the drafting process itself.
Writers can expect to leave with actionable insights into this most critical of skills as well as fresh material that can be added to existing narratives or form the start of a new one. This workshop would also serve playwrights, screen writers and creative non-fiction writers.
A written critique by the instructor is included in the cost of this workshop. Using the ideas from our workshop, take up to a week to complete a scene or revise one from an existing work (2000 words max, via email) to receive actionable, detailed feedback on your work.
