Rock That Prose: Styling Tricks That Actually Work

$75.00

Instructor: Allison Alsup
Genre: Prose
Number of Sessions: 1
Meets: 1 Saturday, 1-4 PM CT
Dates: October 14, 2023
Where: NOCCA Foundation
Cost: $75 Early bird until October 1, 2023: $65

When it comes to phrasing, little changes can have a big impact on the page–affecting  a piece’s pacing, rhythm, meaning and even emotional impact.

And while some might think our “voice” is a matter of instinct or just too personal to tinker with, savvy writers know otherwise. Prose style is like any other point of writing craft: a series of choices that help further or hinder our vision as well as our connection to readers. The more we learn about these choices, the more effective–and adaptive–we become as writers.

This hands-on workshop is for anyone wanting to improve their prose control: novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, even those who do not identify as creative writers (yet!).

Using examples from a diverse selection of authors as inspiration, we’ll try our own hand at custom, guided exercises designed to work our creative skills on the sentence, phrase, and word levels.
We’ll experiment with tried and true tricks of the trade, including devices such as intentional fragments and repetition, the “right” ordering of details, distinguishing between quick vs. slow phrasing.

As we play with language, we’ll feel our fluidity of expression improve, all while deepening our understanding of the effect our choices exert on the reader.

3 hours. All genres. No previous writing workshop experience required.
